What is Spirituality?

Spirituality is a very difficult term to define since it can mean different things to different people. Some may associate it with yoga, some others with church, and a few with the feeling they occasionally have of connecting with something higher, bigger than our selves.

But beyond everything mentioned, spirituality refers – in its essence – to the “knowing of Reality”. Is the pursuit of becoming conscious of the central questions that permeate our humanity, like:

  • Who am I?
  • What am I?
  • What is Life?
  • What is Another?
  • What is Reality?
  • What is Now?

This is done by stripping away our accumulated beliefs, thoughts, acquired theories, and conclusions and by trying to experience the truth of these facets directly. In other words, to transcend the mind and become conscious of the Truth. Here’s a quote that goes straight into the point:

Types of Spirituality

The avid reader might already suspect it, but there cannot be different types of spirituality. Since there can only be one Reality, there can only be one Truth. But there’s no one perfect path to arrive at this that fits us all.

Although the objective is the same, different people resonate with different practices, which usually include yoga, meditation, mindfulness, contemplation, mantras, prayer, and so on. But this doesn’t mean that there are different types of spirituality; it just means that there’s not only one road to arrive at our desired goal!

Is Religion Spirituality?

The answer is more complex than a simple “yes” or “no”. Most religions start with an extremely wise person having a mystical realization/epiphany/enlightenment/Communication with God and teaching his or her discoveries to the world.

This list includes Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, Lao Tzu, Mohammed, and several more.

Most of them probably had true epiphanies that were beyond human intellect but when taught, people took their teachings as something to be believed in rather an experienced. In that way, they ended up constructing belief systems and dogmatic rituals to be followed, thus creating a region (Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Confucianism).

To go back to the question “is religion spirituality?”, the answer is no. Spirituality is about becoming conscious and experiencing the Truth for oneself, while religion’s primary objective is to make its followers accept a specific belief structure.
