The Importance of Reading

Reading is one, if not the most important habit we can implement if we want to improve the quality of our lives, become more successful or increase our well-being. A single $10 book can store hundreds of incredible tips, knowledge worth thousands of dollars, and life-transforming ideas. No matter if you want to improve your relationships, make more money, learn a new skill, or to control your emotions, there’s a great book out there for everything you need or desire. But the truth is, even though we have the possibility to study directly from the best teachers, few of us actually take the time every day to sit down and do it. But why?

The Problem with Schools

We are born in a broken educational system. For at least 12 years of our lives, thanks to poorly designed schooling systems, curriculums that are far removed from daily reality, and teachers that are not given the right tools and content, we end up associating learning, studying, and reading with boredom, apathy, tests, and stress. It’s natural that by the time we reach 18 we cannot even think of reading regularly nor remotely consider the possibility of it being fun.

As a result, most of us, by the time we reach adulthood, quit learning, reading, and ultimately, growing. Without new sources of knowledge, we are stuck with the beliefs, paradigms, and ways of doing things we acquired in high-school, college, and from family and friends, which is usually not the very best. But it doesn’t need to be this way…

Read a Book Challenge

This Course’s intent is to radically change how we hold reading, learning, and studying. Instead of seeing it as an activity to be avoided, it should be seen as indispensable as going to the gym or eating healthy. Joseph Addison, an English poet used to say:

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

I’ve been reading regularly for the past 6 years and finished more than 300 of them. I’ve read and I am currently reading about physics, math’s, history, personal development, philosophy, and much more. And looking backwards, I can see that my life can be divided into two parts: Before I started reading and after. I cannot even begin to explain how reading has changed my life for the better, made me gain lots of new perspectives, and just made everything I encounter way more interesting.

And I’m not saying this to brag. What I’m explaining is the rule, not an exception. I’m not super-productive, nor I learned a secret speed-reading technique. There are people that read 10 times more books. But I’m sure that everyone can make it happen with time, dedication, and the right tools and tips.

So I want to share what I collected through this journey because I’m tired of seeing people miss the chance of improving and creating a better life because of bad past experiences with books.
